The grapefruit diet is often considered one of the original fad diet weight loss plan. Originating in the 1930s, the grapefruit diet plan activates specific fat-burning enzymes that increases metabolism and weight loss.
How The Grapefruit Diet Works
Although several different variations of the grapefruit diet plan exists, most variations of the diet last roughly two weeks and claim to lose between 10 and 12 pounds.
The grapefruit diet calls for eating grapefruit with every meal, three meals a day, for two weeks - that, my friends, is a ton of grapefruit!

Grapefruit Diet Weight Loss Plan
Looking at the original version of this diet, you can see how following the grapefruit diet results in weight loss. In addition to eating grapefruit (or drinking grapefruit juice) before each meal, the original grapefruit diet also includes:
- Reducing the amount of simple sugars and carbohydrates;
- Increasing consumption of foods rich in protein, including chicken, eggs, and red meat;
- Drinking at least 64 ounces of water a day;
- Drinking coffee
- Cutting calories - lowering calories to 800 calories a day in some plans.
Burning Fat with Grapefruit Diets
Looking at the various requirements of the grapefruit diet, it becomes clear to see how the grapefruit diet burns fat. While many claim grapefruit contains enzymes that stimulate fat-burning, successful weight loss on the grapefruit diet results from reducing the amount of carbohydrates, sugar, and calories consumed.
To see exactly how the grapefruit diet results in weight loss, let’s do the math. So, we know that burning 3,500 calories results in roughly one pound of weight loss. Assuming we normally consume the recommended 2,500 calories a day, and assuming we reduce caloric intake to 800 calories a day while on the grapefruit diet, we would consume roughly 1200 calories per day less. Over a two-week diet period, that yields nearly a 7 pound weight loss. In addition, this caloric deficit requires your body to tap into stored body fat, resulting in additional weight loss of 5 to 7 pounds.
Grapefruit Nutritional Information
Grapefruit is fat-free and contains roughly 100 calories per serving; it is also rich in vitamin C, and has no sodium or cholesterol. In addition, grapefruit is low in carbohydrates, containing around 25 grams per serving.
Research Supports Weight Loss With The Grapefruit Diet
While many question the validity and effectiveness of the grapefruit diet, research has demonstrated that people who are obese and ate 1/2 a grapefruit before eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner for three months lost more weight than those who did not eat grapefruit.
While grapefruit doesn’t contain secret fat-burning ingredients, experts believe the water and fiber in the grapefruit curbs hunger and appetite - resulting in less food consumed during meals.
While grapefruit alone will not result in miracle weight loss, it can play an integral part in a healthy weight loss plan. For many, combining daily exercise and healthy eating with eating grapefruit before each meal results in an increased metabolism, improved fat burning, and improved weight loss.
