Common’s Super-Healthy Diet Makes Us Feel Like Gluttonous Swine
WRITTEN BY DAVID WALTERS
In the early ’90s, at the height of the East Coast/West Coast hip-hop feud,Common rose above the fray with a socially conscious message. Decades later, the Grammy- and Oscar-winning rapper has finally owned up to his own geographic affiliations—when it comes to green juice.
Let’s talk about your daily routine. What’s on the menu for breakfast?
Well, first of all, I love food, and breakfast is one of my favorite meals. My standard routine is to first get some water and juices in my body early. A green juice—usually a vegetable juice, depending on what coast I’m on.
What’s the difference between west coast and east coast juices?
Well, the places I go to are different. On the West Coast, I go to a place called Beaming and get the Radiance, with spinach, rose water, chlorophyll, and pear. On the East Coast, I go to Pressed Juicery and get the Greens 3: spinach, parsley, kale, and apple. On the set of Barbershop: The Next Cut, people would ask, ‘Why are you drinking those juices?’ The next week, they’d be drinking their own. Because they try it and it’s good. That’s the key.
You Instagrammed a brunch picture recently. Where were you?
That’s one of my favorite restaurants: My 2 Cents in Los Angeles. The food is cooked with love and it’s still healthy. You can get some of the best veggie bacon on the planet, broiled fish, gluten-free spaghetti. The owner, Alisa Reynolds, was my personal chef for a while, so I knew what she could bring to the table.
What do you bring to the table? Can you cook?
I leave it to the professionals. In fact, on a scale of one to ten—ten being the highest—I’m a one when it comes to cooking. I use a personal chef now named Lauren Von Der Pool, and I watch her create. I believe in the creativity of cooking; unfortunately, I haven’t tapped into that part of my own creativity. [laughs]
Where do eat when you’re in New York?
One of my favorite restaurants in New York is Minetta Tavern. I love that place because you can go there late night. I don’t eat french
fries every day, so when I do, it’s like, Have the best. The fries at Minetta Tavern are top-notch.
Can you eat healthy there?
No, it’s more of a “screw it, I’m going for it” place. I mean, I’m a pescetarian, so I’m not going to get a hamburger, even though everyone says they’re incredible. [laughs]
What’s another indulgence of yours?
I love good theater popcorn, like you get when you go to the Arclight in LA or the Landmark Theatre in NY. When my chef makes popcorn, she puts garlic on there and mixes it with nutritional yeast, which adds a great depth of flavor.
You’re currently shooting two action films: John Wick 2 and Suicide Squad. Has the training affected your diet?
Training has been intense, and it’s made me stay more dedicated. I’d usually have more cheat days, but when you’re doing fight training, you have to be at top level. Keanu Reeves and I just shot a fight scene that started at 8pm and didn’t end until 8am! So you have to know how to get your body right for that.

Another upcoming film, Leavey, took you to Spain. How was the food?
I’ll be honest: I love Spain, and I had the best time, but I didn’t have the best food experience. I didn’t get any paella. We were in Zaragoza, and it was one of those places that makes you think, ‘Thank God I brought my chef!’
Time for some rapid-fire: late-night snack?
If you could invite three people, living or dead, to a dinner party, who would they be?
Marvin Gaye, Halle Berry, and Leonardo DiCaprio, just because I love him.
What would you serve?
We’d have the best seafood available. I mean, I’d make sure they had chicken or access to some burgers if they wanted ‘em, but I would have seafood, some of it cooked in an Indian style, and some cooked in a Caribbean style. [pause] You know, instead of Marvin Gaye—God bless his soul—I’d invite Billie Holiday.
You’re booting Marvin? Can he at least have a doggie bag?
[laughs] Yeah, I’ll hook him up.
