Regular exercise and a healthy diet aren’t the only ways to get in shape; while exercise and diet are important, many people are unaware of how the best vitamins for weight loss can help. Let’s take a look at the best vitamins for weight loss and metabolism.

Not All Fat-Burning Vitamins Are Created Equal

Not all fat-burning vitamins are similar; in fact, there are two very different, but equally important categories of vitamins - water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins.  You see, vitamins are grouped by how they are metabolized by the body; and each type of vitamin does very different things for your body.

Water-Soluble Vitamins: Your Secret To Fat Loss

Fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamins A,D, E, & K are stored in large amounts in body fat; they are typically present in large amounts and serve mostly to maintain and repair the body.  Vitamin D is the exception; vitamin D assists with weight loss, I’ll discuss that later in this article.

Water-soluble vitamins, on the other hand,  dissolve in water (in the body) and unlike fat-soluble vitamin cannot be stored in the body.  This means that any extra amounts of water-soluble vitamins are excreted in the urine (peed out) and need to be replaced continuously.  According to the scientists at Colorado State University, water-soluble vitamins groups include the B and C vitamins.

Research is demonstrating that the B and C vitamins play a key role in metabolism, fat-burning, and weight loss. Water-soluble B and C vitamins are also delicate and are easily destroyed when cooking.  That is why they are best consumed raw - or at least in foods that are minimally processed.

The Vitamin B – Inflammation Connection

New studies show that low levels of vitamin B6 are closely related to chronic inflammation in the body.  Chronic inflammation increases risk of arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.  In fact, scientists recently discovered that people with the highest risk of suffering from chronic inflammation has the lowest measured levels of vitamin B6; on the other hand, those with the highest levels of B6 had the lowest risk of inflammation.

Prime Sources of Vitamin B

People who drink large amounts of alcohol or those who subscribe to a vegan diet are typically vitamin B deficient.  Vitamin B deficiencies have been related to several health concerns, including fatigue, lack of energy, and poor metabolism.

Prime sources of vitamin B include dark leafy greens, chicken, beef, eggs, dairy products, seafood, and whole grains. Other vitamin B rich- foods for weight loss include seaweed and those containing blue green algae.

The Vitamin B6 – Obesity Connection

New studies show that decreased levels of vitamin B6 contribute to to obesity caused by chronic inflammation in the body.  We know that chronic and severe inflammation caused many health issues, including slowed metabolism,  heart disease, insulin resistance, obesity, and metabolic syndrome.

Researchers have recently found that people with the highest levels of chronic inflammation were also those with the lowest B-6 levels.  On the other hand, those with lowest inflammation levels were those with the highest recorded B-6 levels.   So, if you are looking for vitamins to lose weight, look first to the B vitamins.

Vitamin C For Increased Energy and Increased Weight Loss

Like vitamin B, those who are obese tend to have lower levels of vitamin C in their bodies.  A recent study from the Journal of College Nutrition demonstrated that increasing consumption of vitamin C could increase fat-burning by nearly 30%.

Medical experts recommend consuming at least 90 mg of vitamin C for increased weight loss.

Optimal sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, and peppers; all essential components of a fat-burning diet.

Vitamin D For Weight Loss

Vitamin D has many health benefits, including being a vitamin that contributes to weight loss.  In fact, recent research published in Nutrition Journal indicates that vitamin D might be the key to curbing appetite and controlling hunger.  The research demonstrated that those supplementing with vitamin D for a prolonged period demonstrated a nearly 10% decrease in body fat.  This research was substantiated by a study published by Minnesota University; this study demonstrated that higher levels of vitamin D in the body was associated with lower percentage of belly fat and overall body fat.

The best source of vitamin D is daily exposure to sunlight; however, vitamin D is also found in dairy products, fish, eggs, and high-quality vitamin D supplements.

Eating a healthy diet and regular exercise are the cornerstones of any successful weight loss program; however, don’t overlook the best vitamins for weight loss!
